With interior designer Kelly Wearstler taking a foothold in the fashion world, the fashion designers are uping the ante! I was invited to the new Brizo H20 Dream Showroom last month at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago and if you are in the Windy City - you MUST stop by. It is by FAR the most innovative showroom to date in terms of interior accouretements. There is a huge iPAD mounted to the wall where it was so fun to play around the selections - most of the showrooms fixtures are working as well so you are able to be very hands on and know exactly what you are buying. Antiques: Pittet Company - A Dallas Institution

When I am on the hunt for a bespoke piece of object d’art or certain antique commode that will make my clients stop dead in their tracks, I take them to Antiques Row, located in the Dallas Design District, and make sure I make a stop at the renowned Pittet Company.

I was lucky enough to get a guided tour by Mr. Pittet’s showroom manager Michael Smith whom joined forces with Pittet nearly seven years ago. Having fourteen years experience in custom cabinetry and fine antiquities Pittet and Smith have created an eclectic showroom that is a joy to visit.

Featuring over 12,000 square feet of showroom space, chock full of goods that we can salivate over – just being sure not to leave any water damage of course...! I just came back from Europe, touring castles and palaces occupied by kings and queens and I really felt as if the designers had been stopping in at Pittet Company to fill up the palatial spaces – despite the time difference, they just traveled to the future I am presuming?!

I found it interesting that unlike most antique dealers, Pittet does not go to Europe twice a year to the antique markets – they are too well-heeled and been around the block to do that – but have a secret antique spy I call him – who’s daily task is to scour all of Europe for only the BEST pieces. They do not have to fill up a container with “filler” pieces because they ship containers out faster then you can say, well, "17^th century antique"…and you can tell just by perusing their showroom every so often as there is always new goodies, and of course, new goodies with SOLD tags.

Pittet Company specializes in 17^th,18^th, and 19^th century furnishings boasting a comprehensive inventory from European markets and private estates and also if that wasn’t enough on their plate they had to be overachievers outdo themselves (because the only competition should be against yourself) and open a second shop – Pittet Architectuals that is nearly double in size that includes antique reproductions doorways, stone and marble fountains, mantel pieces, iron gates and garden statuary.

I am obsessing over the commode above. I can see this in super sleek hi-rise that is refined modern at the same time, with this piece thrown in for a dramatic focal point. Imagine it with a piece of abstract art above, that is on the same fierceness level as Louboutin spiked heels.

This would be the piece d' resistance in any bedroom.

Again, think super detailed headboard with white crisp linens and top it off with a simple red and metallic geometric pillow in the middle.

Ok...just fell in love, again.

In all my endless hours of sifting through hordes of antiques as a designer, I have never seen such a glam cocktail table. What an amazing shape and size this baby was.

Pittet also features some of the more Belgian and Swedish style of antiques that our sister city down south, H-Town and also Nawlins, feature in their shops that is a popular look in our city.

The worn patina of time will never go out of style, no matter how much the manufacturers of Botox tell us.

Starbursts, sunbursts - tom-ate-o, toe-mat-o. Regardless of what you call them they will always be timeless and chic in my book.

Beauty is in the details.

Rock crystal chandeliers are beautiful but the stone itself is worthy of its own shot.

Mother nature is the best artist in my opinion.

An unusual piece. The patterning and details alone are interesting enough, however the colors are what drew me to this piece.

If you misbehaved a couple of hundred years ago, they would simply lock in you in the chandelier.

The colors of this piece are intense and rich.

The perspective alone makes me feel as if they are about to come to life and into the room.

Art makes a room come alive.

The detailing on this piece is elaborate and needs to be appreciated in a highly seen area. I would place at the end of a gallery. The silhouette commands attention just as much as its intricacy.

And to instantly update your home, throw some tapestry pillows upon the sofa or bed to create a new look.

Italian ceramics

The piece above is provoking and evocative, reminiscent of the works of the Italian painter Caravaggio.

Many designers have taken pieces from Pittet and built cabinets and built-ins surrounding the pieces to create a TRULY custom cabinet.

However imitation is the best form of flattery, and Pittet can also make custom pieces from the drawing board as well. With Michael Smith's experience in cabinetry and woodworking, you will be hard pressed to find someone who has a discerning eye as his own.

And of course a touch of whimsy thrown in for good measure. Smith says these little guys actually get the most attention in the shop!

Below are a few shots from my recent trip to Europe. These photographs below I took at Wilanow Palance (which actually means Villanueva in Polish!) in Warsaw, Poland - the summer "cottage" ahem...of Polish royalty until 1805. You can see from the furnishings below that Pittet Company resounds to an era when quality and craftmanship were paramount.

I am often in and out of Dallas' premier interior design showrooms sourcing goods for clients and their homes and always on my list of stops is none other than Ceylon et Cie, perhaps the most innovative, eclectic and visual exciting showroom that speaks to all my five senses and perhaps the sixth, which I term as INSPIRATION, as the showroom can easily transcend me from the hustle and bustle of the cosmopolitan metroplex into a Middle Eastern bazaar to a Parisian street market in 2 point 5.

Michelle Nussbaumer has been touted by Elle Decor among other notable tomes as being one of America's tastemakers and in fact will be showcasing her goods on ONE KING'S LANE Tastemaker sale, starting bright and early tomorrow morning and will run through Tuesday June 7. Set the coffee pot on autopilot as you will be missing out on the goodies if you hit that snooze button!

I had the opportunity to catch up with Michelle before the sale -

dD How did your partnership with One Kings Lane transpire?

M - I was so surprised when Ali Pincus called, and we became fast friends on the phone. I had become familiar with One Kings Lane and had loved shopping on the site, and was so pleased when they reached out to me. We ended up having a big party in Dallas with Ali and the One Kings Lane gang. It was a great success, and we all had so much fun together. I love all the girls at One Kings Lane .

dD – Is this the first time you have partnered with One Kings Lane ?

M - I had a sale with One Kings last year and it was such a great and successful experience. We are all really looking forward to this sale.

dD - In today's age of technology and immense amount of ecommerce transactions, what are the benefits to having a brick and mortar decor shop?

M - Ecommerce is great because it makes unique pieces and design available to people everywhere, but there will always be the need for a shop. Even though a picture can say a thousand words, there is nothing like walking into a beautiful environment where all of your senses can come alive.

dD - Americans have been known as the throwaway society in the past, and have preferred the new and shiny over objects that tout a true time worn patina – however, now with the emphasis on reuse and sustainability, antiques have been gaining popularity in mainstream design, even among the younger set. For those on a budget, what items or tips would you give for starting a collection?

M - First of all, I think that Americans have always seen the value in heirloom pieces and family hand me downs. What is different today is that people are more informed and want to mix these antiques with fresh modern pieces. My advice for starting a collection is to go with what you love. Any collection massed together is quite beautiful. Some items that I think are still financially accessible, and are some of my favorite collectibles, are black and white photography, Murano glass and African sculpture and currency.

dD - What are some of your favorite pieces offered in the One Kings Lane sale? How would you use them to decorate a space?

M - This whole collection has been inspired by my travels. My Ikat fabric pillows and Suzani durbar pillows are very “of the moment” and can be used in so many different ways to add personality to a space. The Rootwood Chair is a great sculptural piece. I like to use furniture in a sculptural way.

My amigo Subhi Gharbieh has been wheeling and dealing since the age of 18 when he became a licensed salesperson and attained his brokers license at the age of 20, Subhi is one of the Youngest Brokers in the U S of A at the mere age of 22 and to top it off is an Accredited Luxury Home Specialist. Don't let his age fool you either, he is marketing some of the coolest modern properties in DTOWN, including some that easily price over the million mark.

In his free time, he likes to work out, and play all kinds of sports..especially basketball. His favorite hobbies are traveling to different countries, visiting famous art galleries, admiring unique architecture, and spending time with his family and friends. He is also a huge fan of the Dallas Mavericks.

dallasDECORUM Goes Global-RIO DE JANIERO

Over my birthday week last month, your dallasDECORUM blogger was plucked from the design district to partake in a travel itinerary that consisted of hopping over a pond to another continent...South America, and to be more precise Rio de Janiero. While the trip did consist of design related work, I was able to get out and explore one the city that Jesus himself keeps an eye just in case you have a few too many Caipirinhas - the national cocktail.

Vintage 1930's Postcards

The cars, the clothes, the chivalry...the clothes again! Movie stars flocked to Rio - filming the likes of The Road to Rio, That Man from Rio, and of course some James Bond thrown in for good measure.

What you need in your travel bag...just wait and get your Haviainas in Brazil...you can even customize them. The fashion regime is very casual. Most women do not wear any makeup - they don't really need to, they all have perfect skin! - and every one dons a pair of the national flip flop. In the evening, it is all about staying cool and the least amount of clothing you can get away with so you can samba the night away! Bandeau tops are au rigueur.

Copacabana Hotel

THE hotel of Copacabana Beach, the hotel opened in the 1920's and has hosted the world's more exclusive celebrities and politicians. If you can't fork over a night's stay, check out the Sunday brunch by the pool.

The day I went to pay homage to one of the 7 wonders of the world, it was a beautiful 85 degree day. I caught this shot just in time before the sun crept over, and would have otherwise made it a total blackout of a shot.

MR. MONKEY - He lives on these high peaks of Sugar Loaf, pictured below...actual photo from my trip. Very National Geographic...I can't take credit though.

To get to Sugar Loaf you ascend to one peak in a cable lift and then to another. They are very adamant about checking your tickets from one peak to the next....even stating on the ticket one must have ticket to return. I am glad I kept mine...it is a pretty treacherous climb down it looks like.

Classic Vintage Poster

Ah...and of course the Carnivale girls! Unfortunately I missed the boat and had to leave before Carnivale, the WORLD's Best Party according to Guinness Book of World Records.

A Copacabana girl... although this is from the New York Broadway, I am sure there were many of these in Rio back in 1930's. I am loving those gloves...and the feather!

We checked out LAPA in Rio - I would amount it to Austin's 6th street and Miami's Ocean Drive on steroids. I have never seen that many people spilling onto the streets - there was not enough room in the bars and clubs so people make their own in the street, after street, after street....you get it. It was amazing to see impromptu performances with people simply using a handmade drum and a pair of drum sticks.

Ipanema Beach - My Last Day :(

Ah...yes and of course, the national drink, a Caipirinhas, which simply constitutes for large amounts of rum, sugar and lime. You can pick these up on the beach for less then two reais $.

Ipanema Beach...the water was freezing but refreshing. I found it interesting that most Cariocas can not swim, staying only to where their feet are firmly planted

Um...Speedos, lots of them. Brazilians are definitely the athletic lot, both men and women, you will see them on the beach at the break of dawn playing volleyball...with their feet...

Copacabana

Copacabana is a district located in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its beach-shaped half-moon is also known as Princess of the Sea, by its poetic aura, famous since the 30s. Copacabana beach has led to many songs, books, paintings and photographs. Today is a tourist reference in Brazil.

Ipanema beach

The main attraction of the neighborhood, the Ipanema beach is a favorite of Rio de Janeiro, losing in popularity only to the Copacabana beach, where the city’s New Year happens every year. The place is frequented by people day and night going for a walk, play sports, cycle by its bike path and enjoy the sensuality and beauty of who frequents the place. Kiosks sell various foods and drinks, but the basics are the coconut milk and sandwiches. The boardwalk to the Ipanema beach is bordered by an extensive bike path.

Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar)

One of the most popular tourist attractions of Rio de Janeiro, Sugar Loaf Mountain (in portuguese: Pão de Açúcar) is a place where you have the most beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro. Of the Sugar Loaf can be enjoyed several city beaches, the dense Atlantic Forest vegetation and historic buildings such as the Fort of “Santa Cruz”, the “Fiscal” Island and even downtown.

One of the New 7 Wonders of the Modern World, Christ Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) statue in Rio de Janeiro attracts thousands of tourists all year.
With his arms outstretched over the city, the Christ Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is the most beautiful symbol of Rio de Janeiro and the most famous postcard of Brazil. Located on top of the Corcovado hill, 710 meters (2319,4 ft) above sea level, up there what you see is pure bliss: Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botanical Gardens, the Jockey Club, the Lagoon, in short, a Rio de Janeiro with his breathtaking scenery and unique.

Dallas' Saint Ann's School - NOT Dishing Out Cafeteria Food

Saint Ann's School in it's former days...

When I was a little, and now, when I am big - still to this day, I can look at an old dilapidated building and picture it to full restoration in about 30 seconds. Yes, sometimes I have to work out the kinks, like using existing materials to keep it's authenticity and how it can still be to code, but nonetheless - I could walk old buildings all day long and think about an adaptable use for them. And that is why I am SO glad Dallas did just that for a former schoolhouse, Saint Ann's built in 1927, primarily built as Dallas' first school for Hispanic children it now boasts a great restaurant space with an edgy, modern glam meets zen lodge retreat vibe. If you can't picture that, just go there an experience it yourself...you'll be glad you did.

I had heard numerous friends talking the place up, and had it on my list as places to check out. It was just happenstance that I ran across it when a client recommended it as it was right down the street from her hi-rise where were having an all day photo shoot, trying to get both day and night shots of her place with the famous Dallas skyline in the background - had to wait for that green building to come on! We took a lunch break around 3 and of course the place was dead, they even happened to be having a photo shoot as well, but the crew and I were invited to sit at the bar to chow down.

I took the pressed chicken sandwich complete with pan seared chicken topped with mozzarella cheese on sourdough with roma tomatoes + cilantro pesto sided with sweet potato fries (you can choose regular or a house salad if you like). While the food and service was great, I loved the design scheme throughout and how it played on the school innuendo with the menu on notebook ruled paper. I will have to go back to check out the full dinner menu however.

Not your typical lunch line! I loved the use of the glass floor with pebbles underfoot

Love, love the worn and torn Chesterfield sofa up against the natural wood paneling topped with a black crystal chandelier (for another post on those beauts click here...)

The dining room, sleek and minimal - don't forget to go upstairs where there is a museum collection of Samurai warriors thrown in for your history lesson.

The school can boast Dallas' largest city beer garden as well...now just behave or you might get called into the Principal's office!

Material Spotlight - Carolyn Ray Wallcoverings

While on the plane ride back from sunny Southern California this past Christmas break I was leafing through California Homes magazine, and ran across a Carolyn Ray Wallcoverings ad. I often select wallpaper memos from the David Sutherland showroom in the Dallas Design Center for clients homes. The ad featured her Mermaid Collection line, which struck a cord with me being such a water/beach feign. While it is shown in black and silver, it also comes in several other colorways.

Here in her own words, she explains how an idea is materialized into form...
"Inspiration comes with a trip to the movies, to the museum, to the beach, the woods, the water, the supermarket, the southwest, the southern Pacific, the studio shelf....

Mingled with memory, dreams and predictions, inspiration becomes an idea.

Idea becomes concept in studio experiments. Color makes the image, image transforms color. Color relationships grow, images are modified and refined.

Gradually the destination comes into focus. A livable interior complex yet quiet, color unexpected but somehow natural. A surface develops that is densely iconographic and hardly there at all.

Next the painted surface is transformed into a reproducible design. This always involves compromise and innovation to meet production and end-use requirements while staying true to the idea.

When production is at last complete, there is one more step. Our final collaboration is with the interior designer, whose artistry gives form to our materials."

Cinematic Prose - My Weekend in Movies

You know when you "know" your going to remember something, so you don't write it down...like a new restaurant to try, a band to catch in town...and then it is forgotten by the time your thought reaches the end of the sentence. I do that ALL the time, especially with music and movies. Thankfully with Shazam my eardrums are getting ample amounts of new music, or new to me.

I have been wanting to see "A Single Man" since I saw the still of Julianne Moore in mascara streaked raccoon eyes perching on the fabulous curved sofa, a very similar one sits in the Allan Knight showroom in the International on Turtle Creek. Well and the fact that it was produced by Tom Ford, Gucci's main designing man since 1990 so I knew the fashion would be spot on, as well as the interiors. The men were groomed to absolute perfection of course (why can't straight men dress like this too?!) and I loved the Mid-Century time period, the cars, the clothes, the architecture...the interiors. Here are some stills to share with you...just rent it, but be prepared for a dark tale of loss and desperation.

And then this...it was a Mid-Century weekend I guess. I stopped in at Antiques Moderne on Friday evening to scope out some chairs and that may have done me in.

"Factory Girl" tells the tale of socialite and heiress Edie Sedgwick (Sienna Miller) who was introduced to Andy Warhol during his Factory days where he was beginning his next exploration using film as his medium for his creative outlet. Sedgwick was the star in many of the movies, fast becoming Andy's muse, his IT girl - she even went so far as to mimic his iconic hairstyle.

Sedgwick soon met and seemed to fall in love with, Bob Dylan - however Warhol while openly gay (but some think a virgin) became somewhat obsessive and controlling of their relationship and Sedgwick ended it to appease Warhol, later to spiral into drugs and alcohol when finding out Dylan had married and partly burying her childhood terrors as well. Her father was abusive and distant while her mother turned a blind eye, and most of the children were institutionalized when growing up. She was able to escape New York and went back to California, but her nightmares still followed her.

She died of an overdose at the age of 28.

I have been enamored with this showroom for months since I stumbled upon it as it is only a block down from my offices in the Dallas Design District. Antiques Moderne has taken Mid-Century modern design and made it accessible to Dallasites...and it is one trend that is just heating up in Dallas along with the heat this summer. They can barely keep the items on the floor, many selling within an hour of a post or email newsletter....I already have my eye on a couple of pieces, and was sure not to post those for you to see....yes, I am greedy.

Don't worry I have a post chock full of goodies for your sun and chlorine damaged eyes below. Take heed...

Straight from their website they offer the following autobiography...

This piece is amazing...I see this in a young baccalaureate pad, great for entertaining for dinner parties with a glam mirror above.

In love with these...I want in my room. Think refinished, the pop up details could even be a contrasting color.

I think Kelly Wearstler used these in either her guest bedroom or her beach house if I remember correctly, of course upholstered in her licensed Lee Jofa fabric. They rocked.

This is what started my quest, an editorial in the new DHome magazine on agate napkin rings that can be had at Haven in Dallas, aren't these beautiful? The blue is just insanely blue. I do have agate coasters that I can't bear to sit anything on because I hate covering them up. Yes, a contradiction in function...but with women form always wins. Just ask Christian Louboutin.

These are just like said coasters...I love the larger pieces for serving. So earthy but elegant.

Thom Filicia for Kravet

On Friday one of my favorite reps stopped by to show off the new line of Kravet fabrics designed by Thom Filicia, who gained fame by the hit TV show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Thom worked under the renowned Albert Hadley and employs a clean lined, classic approach mixed with shots of color and a grand off the cuff gesture sometimes in the form of an oversized eagle based console table or some other primal element. His new line of fabrics incorporates everything from bold, graphic prints to organic natural looking solids and textures. I also threw in a few of my favorite interior shots that are in the book...piacere!

This might be one of my favorite library/study I have seen in a long time. It is warm but not dark and dreary. I can already see myself curled up on that sofa digging into my design books...

This is one of another favorite shot of mine. I am in LOVE with the wallpaper/fabric. At first I thought it was a bamboo grasscloth, but upon further inspection is looks like an ikat style technique. It goes great with the linear clean lines of the mid century credenza and the random gallery style prints and art. Ah and I spot a Kravet fabric on the settee...

This was his design board/inspiration board for the room above.

As if we don't know that interior designers are now hawking out their creative licences to furniture companies, fabric houses, lighting vendors and the such - we have now entered the next frontier, that of table top design. It should be fitting as well, with the long standing relationship that designers have had with the DIFFA organization, designing grandiose and elaborate tablescapes for the charity. It seems that fashion designers have long been exploring the medium, such as Versace (below), Kate Spade for Lenox (below), even bridal design guru, Vera Wang. In the parting page of this month's issue of FD Luxe, I came across this insanely over the top jewelry, Hanna Bernhard, designed by the French couple Nathalie and Fernand Bernhard who have been designing the pieces that replicate something an Egyptian king of queen would have worn to call on their primal side. Each piece is loaded with glass and Swarovski crystal and is the replication and their interpretation of animals, reptiles, sea creatures and even the occasional insect or two. You either love them or hate them, but it seems as if America has caught the bug so to speak...

Presidential Architecture - World Cup Inspired Post

In honor of World Cup Soccer, I am posting some of the world's most interesting presidential palaces, jumping off with South African's own Pretoria Union building where state officials meet and the presidential head of state resides in this amazing palace designed by architect Sir Herbert Baker. The building was constructed using a light sandstone material with each stone being individually with the interiors being predominately in the traditional Cape Dutch styling of the area with dark wood floors, light plaster walls and heavy beams with shutters dotting the facade. I find it interesting with the level of beauty of South Africa and a close suburb of Pretoria named Arcadia meaning "Playground of the Gods" that they have the largest number of of embassies in the world outside of our own Washington DC.

Design icon Kelly Wearstler created this Malibu beach home for her and close family friends to veg out by the sea. She called on direct, literal images, materials, and surfaces to ensure the home would be reminiscent of the sea and of course using her inimitable individual style to create the unexpected mix. The floors are a bleached wood, as if they have been aged by the sun and topped with linen covered chair wrapped in twine. While Wearstler's style is not for everyone, she has been the leader in using organic fabrics and materials for accessories and furnishings that many of us have purchased in the last 5 years. Think of those monkey wood tables and pots, the surge of grasscloth and the oversized statement pieces of "jewelery" for your home.

With the onset of high temperatures and humid weather the first place us Texans do is run for cover...and what a way to cool off in this light and airy home that looks as if it was the home of the ultra cool Rat Pack in Palm Springs. With its bright white interior with pops of vibrant color, designed by David Cadwallader, this Mid Century gem is one place I'd like to host a summer party, or two!

I love the left wall detail and the raised marble surround, however dinner guests might need to forewarned before partaking in too much vino to maneuver around this without causing serious injury to themselves...

These UFO inspired domes are actually skylights looking down into the below gallery. Very Jetson's, but very cool!

I love the use of white marble in baths, it is timeless, whether the design is modern or traditional

Designers - Your TO DO Social Media Agenda

I was recently invited to sit and speak as a panelist for Kravet at the Dallas Design Center, along with two other social media mavens Shay Geyer of IBB Design Group/Designer Detective and Sally J. Hammond of Sally J. Designs, about the benefits of social media. It was quite interesting to see the various demographics of designers, young, experienced, men and women who are ready to take the bull by the horns and reap the rewards of social media.

Beth Greene of Kravet gave a quick rundown of the most important social media sites, and I am going to expand on that list with some quick tips and tricks that I have gathered, along with some of my "learning experiences" aka mistakes one inevitably makes when trying anything new.

Social Media Sites To Get On TODAY

1. Linked IN

As a professionals "Facebook" site, it's a networkers dream. You can make a business page and your employees can sign up under it as well, posting what is in essence an online resume for all of your connections to see. I have my twitter and blog feed connected to it so it is not so stagnant. But this is an easy site to maintain, not a lot of upkeep. Set it up once and update your status now and then and your set.

2. Facebook - A personal Page and a Business Page - lot of information here so grab a cup of joe...

Most of you have a Facebook page already. TIP: If you want to connect to potential clients, do not make this personal page so personal that you wouldn't want certain people to see. I am in the process of tweaking mine - everything is a process in social media - you learn what works and what doesn't. The pros of having a personal page is that your not maintaining two separate pages and you already have your site set up with your closest friends so now you work on connecting with their friends, you will not have fans - or now "likes" with this type of page, only friends. By setting up a Business page, technically if you are selling or promoting something you need to set up a Business-type page. You will have to set up a personal page first however, it is an extension of your personal account. The pros are that you have "fans/likes" and ANYONE can "like" your page. You do not have to approve of them or be their friends. The one dilemma I have seen with this is when you post on other people's pages, your post is done under your personal page, which makes it hard for people to link back to your Business page easily, especially if they are under two different names. So you have to weigh out what will work for you and your business the best. Hope I haven't lost you yet!

Things to post on your Facebook page - I have my blog linked to my dallasDECORUM site, so it is updated every time a new blog post comes out, which is then linked to the below mentioned, twitter account so that is updated automatically, and finally that is on auto link to my Linked IN account, so my status is updated as well. TIP - Get everything on AUTO, it will make your efforts much more easy and save a ton of time! If you have questions, email me.

Your Facebook page is not a page where your constantly have yourself on blast 24/7, I would use the 80/20 rule, 80 is education/information about relevant info your readers would use and find interesting, ie - tips and tricks to updating their house/new tile ideas/cool antiques you came across in a showroom, something to that degree. The remaining 20 you can promote yourself, lightly, an award you recently won, a cool project you just scored, or a magazine your work was published in. Just think about your personal experiences - you don't want to be that pushy car salesman that everybody loathes.

3. Twitter

300,000 new users everyday - need I say more? 140 characters. That is what you get to publish on this site. It is a constant feed of people you follow of their random thoughts and links to their sites, or a site that they found interesting. You can follow anyone from Bill Gates to your favorite celebrity - it is like living vicariously through hundreds of people. I use this site to feed my blog post through and it links back to my blog/facebook page. I will also snap shots on my iPhone of something cool that I come across, sometimes it is something random like the shot of a tree changing colors to a piece of furniture I just received for a client that I want to share with the world. Sign up and try not to become an addict....that is the hard part. Actually, I am going through withdraw right now.

4. Blog - Blogger or Wordpress?

The first thing I want to mention is if you are an interior designer, you probably eat, drink and live it - so I will say that you must have a passion for the craft of design and also one of writing, though you don't have to be Pulitzer prize winner by any means and a photo speaks a thousand words, but to have a blog you must be dedicated to it as it is time consuming. If you are ready to commit at least several hours a week to this, start researching if a Wordpress or blogspot site is for you. I personally have not used Wordpress but know that its use is on the rise and it is easy to incorporate a "pre-fab" template into the site to give you a more personal image, but you can do the same for blogger as well.

TIPS TO DRIVE TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOG

1.Read and link to other people's blog, they may link back to you. I am linked in Lower Oaklawn's and Kravet Inspired.talk's blog as well as others. It drives traffic to your site.

2. Leave comments on other people's blog. Writing your blog is half of it - you have to allow for time to network, so to speak, with the online world to make it count. This is something I admit I struggle with - it is very time consuming

3. Constantly research...go here for some more tips...

The final point is to have fun and show your client's your personal side!

Requiem Reading...Inspiring Libraries

One of my favorite rooms to design is the library, with its interesting challenge to display or hide books (who would want to do that?) in an ever inventive way while speaking to the soul of the client, isn't that what books do? Here are a few of the images I have collected over time of rooms that speak to me in one way or another...and a couple I have designed as well.

My own design above, for Dallas builder Sharif Munir for the 2010 model showhome at 5107 Kelsey Rd. The home is Mediterranean with with some formal Palm Beach details thrown throughout, including the X floor pattern dotted with inserts of marble and plaster relief ceiling design.

And another personal favorite above, I like how the antiqued mirror breaks up the mass display of books and also how neutral the space is, save for the art and accent pieces.

I have been knee deep in design work and related events for the past few weeks (no complaints!) and realized my stack of design magazines was reaching over 2' - while I work as a full time interior designer and part time interior design blogger but usually find myself doing something with that combo to relax, which means diving in head first to a great shelter magazine or new design book. I came across the column in Veranda magazine "Defining Design" where four interior designers are asked four questions and Dallas' own Michelle Nussbaumer was featured where she dished about the new direction of design and architecture and even who she looks up to in the design world.

While maintaining these past few crazy weeks I was not able to attend Michelle's event hosted at her showroom in the design district, Ceylon et Cie where "All The Best" blogger Ronda Carman and Sferra Linens joined forces to launch the new linen line for Sferra, however one of my other favorite bloggers Rebecca Sherman of Houses, Gardens, People did and posted wonderful photos on her site...check it out!

Join Dwell with Dignity for Official "Housewarming" Party

A year has passed since Dwell With Dignity did their very first install for a mother and daughter. Looking back and seeing how far Dwell With Dignity has come, it’s time to celebrate this past year’s achievements in style. On Friday, May 21 from 6-8pm, Dwell With Dignity will host a heartfelt, housewarming party welcoming friends, family and volunteers into their new home and office space.

Weekend Projects - What I've Been Doing to My OWN House

I am super excited to rush home tonight to see my wood floors that are going to be installed while I am at work...I have had carpet in my living room for 3 years and hated every second of it! The bedrooms will still have carpet for now while the rest of the house has tile. Carpet to me should be left for places like bedrooms, media rooms (for acoustics) and possibly playrooms where the kiddos love to roll around in the fluffiness of the accumulation of 5 million dust mites. Ugh...but really, if you can do wood everywhere, do it!

I selected a medium to dark tone with a wider width board being over 5". The company also sells the wood in wider widths, even up to 8" in the bamboo. I personally really like bamboo flooring - it is modern, inexpensive and green as bamboo is a sustainable material and has an exponential growth rate. It is also not limited to light tones people normally correlate to bamboo materials, but is also available in medium to espresso finishes. I purchased my flooring online via Simple Floors, a great selection with even better prices and uber friendly employees.

So now I am faced with making yet another decision, a rug for this room. As a designer, maybe my fellow designers go through this as well, I can NOT make a decision for myself! Actually, that is not entirely true, if I had an unlimited budget I could make decisions all day long, to the dismay of my bank account! It is a daunting task to find something I can spend a reasonable amount of money on, that is not from Crate & Barrel or some other big box retailer that Sue and Mary don't already have in their house. That is why I am a big fan of estate sales, antique malls, and just random shops that have one a kind pieces. Here are a few selections that I have made for my home thus far...and some rug options I have below. Let me know which one is your favorite!

BREAKFAST/DINING ROOM

This is a recent purchase I made, a pendant light fixture via Uttermost. I liked how it is modern yet still a little funky and different

While purusing a favorite delivery company's consignment store, PDS Consignments, I found a marble topped table similiar to the Ereo Sarrinen Tulip Table. While the base is different (so not a true one) it did have the beautiful veined top and it was $150 for a 50"! This is probably one of my favorite pieces in the house. I had glass, then wood and both are impossible to keep clean and damage fee - this is so easy to clean and resists scratching and denting.

MY OFFICE

I have converted my dining room into my office so my 6 year old could take over the extra bedroom and have her own playroom where I can just close the door when a tornadoe goes through it! And during big holidays it is not hard to simply turn the table around and make it a dining room again. This is my inspiration shot, a Kelly Wearstler design, I want to incorporate this feel into the room, mixing different styles and periods but in a way that everything works well together. I am also planning on papering one wall...again I haven't decided on the exact one, but have narrowed it down from over 20 (I am being serious, unfortunately).

LIVING/FAMILY ROOM

Okay, above my living room currently has the walls painted almost this exact color,and the trim being about the same as well. My home is on the soft modern side but with random funkinesss thrown in, like a huge black and white macro shot of a dandelion, with orchids and books everywhere, things like that. The wood floors will be the medium to dark and here are my rug selections below...if I could run over to Edward Fields and have Debbie make me up a custom beaut I would, but dropping $15G's isn't an option :0

I am leaning towards the beige or the tan - I want the rug to be lighter than the floors...this is my favorite

Arteriors Home Present The Laura Kirar Collection

During this past market in High Point, North Carolina, Arteriors Home unveiled their latest collection that collaborates with interior designer Laura Kirar. This trend of licensing continues to gain momentum where designers are not merely relying on client based design fees and commissions, but outsourcing their talents much like a celebrity or sport athlete endorsement, without the paparazzi! I can't really imagine a hoard of reporters tracking a designer down to hear what the latest color trend is, but they are definitely a source of inspiration for others.

Laura Kirar is a Miami and New York based designer, the founder and creative director of TRU Design and brings to the Arteriors Home collection a mix of metals, finishes, and organic shapes that are represented in lighting, accessories, and wall decor. A sampling of the 90-piece collection below. I am loving the Seed and Leave chandelier as well as the metal lotus flower. Enjoy!

At the recent IIDA Fashion Show hosted by Dallas Design District Carson Art on Hi Line, members of the design community came together to collaborate on a "Project Runway" inspired event where members were pushed to think outside of the box to create an outfit using items that were relevant to the interior design industry. My favorite one is the following image where she is wearing a paint deck, very cute! Perhaps an inspiration for a future Halloween costume? And what costume fashion event would be complete without a Lady Gaga?!

Design Districts Meddlesome Moth Now Open!

The Dallas Design District is definitely in an upswing with the highly anticipated opening of one of the first restaurants in the district, Shannon Wynn's Meddlesome Moth off of Hi Line and Oaklawn. Designers have complained for years there is a very limited selection of avenues to choose from without having to leave the district to schmooze with clients. Margeaux's in the International on Turtle Creek remains a favorite while also the Blue Artichoke in Found Antiques boasts a wonderful lunch menu, but now the Design District welcomes with open arms another addition. Wynn is also famed for Flying Fish and Flying Saucer and has an extensive wine and beer menu featuring over 40 beers on tap.

The restaurant is housed in the old Artemide and Ann Sack showrooms, one cool touch being that they kept the flooring samples that were shown in Ann Sacks showroom installed in the floor and stained glass panels brought in from the old Hard Rock Cafe where they are installed at an angle so they could fit in the space. The Moth also features art by Dmitri Vail from another Design District favorite, Griffin Trading Co. off of Howell. One touch is the walled in patio with a gravel pit and seating niche. Technorati - iPhone Apps Made to Make Life as a Designer Easier

My "ex" phone was called "The Laptop" - without officially penning the name it seemed as if everyone I came across who came in contact with my cell phone dubbed it so. A Sprint Motorola Q9 that at the time was capable of functioning as my third arm, however was seemingly large in a world of thin touch screen phones and especially so when the iPhone was launched. I was leery of hopping on the bandwagon, any one at that, but soon succumbed when I was told I could be three times as productive while still maintaining the same monthly bill. I have never looked back! And while most phones as outdated as soon as they hit the store shelves, the iPhone can simply reinvent itself in a single production of a new app, with hundreds being programed daily. So here is a short list with the help of House Beautiful on my favorite iPhone apps meant to make our lives a little easier...

The camera on the iPhone is by far, bar none, the most effective however. Great resolution and lighting with a couple vices being there is no zoom or flash, really?? - I hear the new update this summer will solve the zoom problem however. I am looking for an app to file the photos per client, occasion, person, etc..so if anyone know of one let me know!

Design Trend: Bold & Beautiful Ikat

Perhaps the hottest trend in the fabric world that is au courant is the bold ethnic print of the ikat, with its cross between an organic but graphic pattern it can transpose from a contemporary to a traditional setting with a toss of a pillow...

With High Point market going on right now, I am hearing that they are busier than ever, with the pre market registration at its highest ever, showrooms packed and anticipating high sales volumes. Great news for everyone in the design industry! A new trend to breach the home decor sector at the mid price point level includes liscensing by the industry's most recognized designers, including a new partnership by Globalviews and Barbara Barry. Barry whom boasts lines with Kravet, Baker and even commercial flooring company Bluridge to name a few has been at the forefront of brand liscensing. Here are a few new items her line at Globalviews will be featuring - they have stayed within her clean lined, classic realm and would fit in in with a variety of decor settings. Above she is pictured with Globalviews CEO David Gebhart.

Dwell w/ Dignity's Latest Install!

I am getting this week off to a good & fresh start with some images from Dwell w/ Dignity's latest installation, one of my favorite non profits that places struggling families in a fully decked out apartment meant to inspire them to maintain or surpass their current situation - you can read all of the info here from a previous in depth post. All of the furnishings and time spent are donated by wonderful people. To find out how you can help - go here. The installation happened on Thursday and the single mother and her 6 year old daughter moved in just two days later, the place is beyond cute! Best wishes to mother and daughter - they were meant to have their lives touched by Dwell with Dignity!

A light to brilliant bluish green.

With Turquoise being dubbed 2010 Color of the Year, I am flooding you with some images to inspire you to add a splash of it your designs - whether it is drowing your walls in a bucket of paint or simply using an accent piece of ceramics. It is perhaps my favorite color, and can transport me to the Caribbean just by being in it presence. I hope it conjures up some good feelings for you as well! Piacere!
